Follower count says how many people could see your content. Engagement rate says how many of them care. It is the number brands look at first when they evaluate a creator, because a small, engaged audience usually outperforms a large, passive one.

The standard formula is engagement per post divided by followers, expressed as a percentage: (likes + comments + shares) ÷ followers × 100. On platforms where views matter more than follower count, like TikTok and YouTube, you can also enter average views to see engagement per view, which is what many brands use for short-form video.
Engagement rate naturally falls as an account grows, so compare yourself to your tier rather than to huge accounts. Within a tier, the accounts with the highest rates tend to post consistently, reply to comments in the first hour, and give people something to do after the post, like a link in bio worth clicking.
It depends on account size. For a micro creator (10K to 50K followers), around 1 percent is average on Instagram, 3 percent is good, and 6 percent is excellent. Smaller accounts usually run higher and very large accounts lower, and the calculator adjusts the benchmark to your tier.
Take your last 10 to 12 posts, add up the likes and comments, and divide by the number of posts. Instagram, TikTok, and YouTube each show per-post numbers in their analytics.
TikTok distributes content to non-followers through the For You page, so views and engagement are not tied to follower count. For TikTok, the engagement-per-view number is usually more meaningful.
