Free Social Media Character Counter

Count characters, words, and sentences as you type, then check your text against the limits for Instagram, TikTok, X, YouTube, LinkedIn, and more.

Live counts as you type

Paste or type your caption, bio, post, or description and the counter updates instantly with characters, characters without spaces, words, sentences, paragraphs, and estimated reading time. Below the counts, every major platform is listed with its limit and whether your text fits.

Everything runs in your browser. Nothing you type is sent anywhere.

Character limits by platform

The limits the counter checks against:

  • Instagram: 150-character bio, 2,200-character caption
  • TikTok: 80-character bio, 2,200-character caption
  • X (Twitter): 280-character post, 160-character bio
  • YouTube: 100-character title, 5,000-character description
  • LinkedIn: 220-character headline, 3,000-character post
  • Threads: 500 characters; Bluesky: 300; Pinterest: 500-character description

Why the limit is not the target

Most platforms truncate long text behind a "more" link after the first line or two. On Instagram, roughly the first 125 characters of a caption show before the fold; on LinkedIn, about 210. Put the hook and any call to action in that visible portion, and use the rest for detail and hashtags.

Frequently asked questions

How many characters can an Instagram caption have?

Instagram captions are limited to 2,200 characters, and bios to 150. Only about the first 125 characters of a caption show in the feed before the "more" link.

Do emojis count as one character?

Usually more than one. Many emojis are made of several Unicode code points, and X in particular counts most emojis as two characters. Leave a little headroom if your text is close to a limit.

Do hashtags count toward the limit?

Yes. Hashtags, mentions, and links all count toward the character limit on every platform.

Is my text saved anywhere?

No. The counter runs entirely in your browser and nothing is uploaded or stored.
