BLACK IS BACK! A classic take on Plavac Mali - full bodied, bursting with black fruit aromas and Mediterranean herbs. The spicy, peppery finish sets it apart for us. Plavac Mali is an ancient variety and is the most widely planted red grape in Croatia. It thrives in mainland Dalmatia, the Pelješac peninsula, & the islands of Brač & Hvar. Plavac Mali wines are full bodied, hearty and opulent, with ripe notes of fig, plum and spice, pairing well with game and red meat dishes. Black Plavac Mali is a blend of grapes from two Dalmatian vineyards: Sv. Roko in Komarna (mainland, coastal vineyards) and Sv. Lucia in Dingač (Pelješac peninsula). It is aged in a combination of large wooden tanks, concrete tanks, and small barrique barrels. It is released to market after 24 months of aging. Black Dalmatian is a dry red wine dominated by aromas of dark berry fruit and plums with Mediterranean herbal notes such as mint, basil and oregano. Ante Sladić stands proudly at the helm of his small family winery. Traditions of grape growing and winemaking run deep in the family and are in good hands, as is evidenced by the fact that Ante, and his brother Juraj (of nearby Testament Winery fame), are two of Croatia's most talented young winemakers. Production is exclusively with indigenous grape varieties, and rare ones at that. Ante is passionate about the potential of these lesser known grapes, and recognises his fortune to live in a small pocket of the world where they thrive. He fundamentally believes that he has both an obligation and responsibility to show these varieties to the world. Core to the his winemaking principles, is the mission to protect and enhance the natural environment while respecting the tradition and local cultural heritage. The latter is strikingly expressed through the contributions of close family friend and designer, Damir Bralić, the creative talent behind Ante's distinctive wine labels. The labels are not just attractive designs, but if you look closely, they speak to the story, and in many cases, the soul of the wines. The shark on the Plavina label, is a native species which also serves as a synonym for the plavina grape. The monk on the Lasina label, is local hero Father Lujo Marun, who is recognized as a pioneer for Croatian archeology. Maps and artifacts reflect the history and geography of the region, and speak to the traditions of the people that have produced wines here for centuries. Zlatan Plenković is regarded by many as one of the founders of modern winemaking in Croatia. An entrepreneur and a risk taker, his story is one of rags to riches in the wine world. Having founded a family horticulture business in 1986, he was one of the first to rebel and produce wines under a private label in 1991 - an activity that, at that time, could have resulted in a prison sentence. Just 3 years later he received a top quality wine designation for his cellar, with international awards soon to follow, winemaker of the year recognition in 2005 and 2007, and a cult following. Today, Zlatan Otok is in the capable hands of his children. They are proud to be leading the family winery into the modern era, with the abundant legacy of their father ever-present in their wine-making philosophy. Welcoming back a summer favourite … Dalmatian Dog Pošip is from the island of Korčula - the ancestral home of Pošip - an indigenous Croatian variety - and is made by master oenologist Igor Radovanovic of Black Island Winery. Handpicked grapes are crushed with minimum pressure. Fermentation takes place for 3-4 weeks in stainless steel tanks under strict temperature control at 15°C. The process of fermentation is followed by 2 months of stirring the fine lees. Crisp and fresh white wine made from pošip grape. Grgić Vina is the family winery of the late and so great Miljenko “Mike” Grgic. Grgić Vina was established in 1996 by Mike, his daughter Violet (President Of Grgich Hills Estate), and Ivo Jeramaz – Mike’s nephew – in Trstenik on the Pelješac peninsula, less than 50km from Mike’s birthplace. The award winning winery produces just 2 wines. Grgić Pošip is full bodied white, produced in the Grgich Hills style of white wines. 30% percent of the wine is aged in French oak, 70% in stainless steel tanks. In Violet Grgić's words, this is "a wine with crispness and floral aromatics, with a richness à la Chardonnay." Vinkomir is a single vineyard, handpicked and low intervention Graševina wine. The vineyards are surrounded by pristine nature dominated by Slavonian oak forests and south-facing slopes at elevations ranging from 200 to 450 m. Vinkomir Grasevina is a great example of what this grape variety can offer when sourced from a premium location and managed to optimal yields. It is of a pale straw colour, with hints of green. Aromas of ripe green apples, citrus, delicate floral notes, and white flowers add complexity to the nose. On the palate, it is crisp and fresh, with lively and vibrant acidity providing structure and balance, along with flavours of juicy pears, lemon zest, and a touch of honeyed sweetness. The wine is medium-bodied, with a silky texture, offering a delightful almost sweet mouthfeel, yet quickly evolving to a salty, crisp, and clean long finish. Clai Baracija Malvazija is back! 💪🍊 This skin-contact white wine has long been a favourite, with its intensity, and clean, crisp yet complex personality. The relatively young vines grow on rocky clay terrain in the small village of Krasica, in Istria. The wine is certified organic and winemaking follows biodynamic principles. Grapes are hand picked, de-stemmed and gravity fed with their skins into large wooden barrels for maceration which varies but usually lasts from 7 to 20 days and starts with natural yeasts on the temperature at 30 Celsius degrees. Pigeage is done at least three times a day in which period wine undergoes malolactic fermentation. Literally meaning "Greek", it was originally believed that the Grk grape was brought to the island of Korčula by the Ancient Greeks in the 5th Century BC. This theory, however, has recently been dispelled as a result of DNA testing and the confirmed parentage with Tribidrag (the original Zinfandel). It is now commonly believe that the name derives from the word gark, meaning bitter, as a result of the wine's refined, somewhat tart aftertaste. The hidden gem of Korčula, this indigenous grape is grown almost exclusively on the island. There are estimated to be only 15 hectares or so of Grk vines planted worldwide, all of which are to be found in Croatia. The limited volumes in production, its typical high quality and distinct flavour profile, have resulted, for more than a decade now, in a frenzy of demand for the rare gem. It is in fact rare to find it outside of Korčula, let alone outside of Croatia. Taste profile aside, one of the elements that makes Grk unique, is that the flower's male organs are under-developed, resulting in a species that is not able to self-pollinate. The solution - it needs to be co-planted in the vineyard with a pollinator, an essential role typically played by the red variety, Plavac Mali. Grk wines tend to be fuller bodied in nature, with great acidity, notable salinity, and an attractive, slightly bitter finish. The Radovanovic Grk is a single vineyard, single tank, limited edition production, made from 50% young and 50% old vines (approximately 50 years old). Following manual harvesting and sorting, it undergoes 6 hours of cold maceration, prior to fermentation in stainless steel, bottling, and bottle ageing. Happy Sauvignon Blanc Day! Featured today is Clai Ottocento Bijeli. Clai Ottocent Bijeli is not your typical Sauvignon Blanc, in fact there is absolutely nothing typical about it. This is a cracker of an orange wine … a blend of Malvazija and Pinot Gris, with a splash of - you guessed it - Sauvignon Blanc! The grapes are hand-picked, destemmed and gravity-fed into open-topped oak barrels for fermentation, malolactic conversion and maceration (around fifteen days for Malvazija, five or six for Sauvignon Blanc and Pinot Grigio). No selected yeasts, enzymes or bacteria are used in the process. Following pressing, the wine is aged for two years in 1000-2500L barrels, after which it is bottled unfiltered. As with all of Clai’s wines, it is natural, organic and follows biodynamic principles. "Bijeli means white in Croatian, while "Ottocento" refers to the "old way" of doing things, like it was the 18th century. This is a blend of pinot grigio and malvazija, plus a splash of sauvignon blanc, the last vintage to contain the latter grape, as it has been grafted over subsequently. The colour is deep amber and the aromatics have shifted far out on the oxidative side of the spectrum, with bruised orchard fruit, quince paste and similar autumnal fruit character. The palate is powerful and deep, with gently tannic texture, mild bitterness, excellent extraction and depth, and notable saltiness. Fine overall balance." John Szabo, MS (92 points.) Miljenko “Mike” Grgic has just celebrated his 100th birthday at the beginning of the month. What better way to celebrate than to showcase Grgic Plavac Mali! Mike grew up in the Dalmatian heartland where the Plavac Mali grape reigns! It is little surprise, therefore, that he chose to showcase the “baby blue” - the flagship red from Dalmatia - at his Croatian family winery. Don’t be fooled, however, by the english translation of the variety - the grapes themselves may be small in size, but the wines are anything but … "This is a wine of immense ripeness and concentration from the Peljesac Peninsula, weighing in at 16% alcohol declared, and smelling like a bowl-full of prunes, raisins and chocolate syrup. Indeed, it's aromatically reminiscent of sun-dried pedro ximenez sherries from southern Spain. The palate is not as soft and supple as one might expect, however, showing considerable tannic grip and acid freshness - the energy and intensity of this wine is really remarkable. Length, too, is exceptional, carried along on those alcohol vapors, but not only; there's genuine concentration and depth on offer. The pleasantly bitter finish further pulls the wine back into balance - everything is on a massive scale but with equal measures, including complexity. This is precisely the sort of wine you want on a cold winter's night, with a rich stew or piece of hard cheese, or just contemplation by the fire. Best 2023-2035." At the heart of the island of Korčula lies Čara, a small agricultural village of hardworking industrious people who live, work and breathe for grapevine. Legend has it that it was here that a wild grapevine was accidentally discovered in a forest, climbing up a wild pomegranate shrub towards the sun. Thus was born pošip, named after the phrase “po šipku” (“up a pomegranate”). Officially protected since 1967, pošip is the first Croatian wine with a protected designation of origin. "The Dalmatian Island of Korcula, where this is grown (and the posip variety originates), was once called "The Black Island", thanks to the dense forests that covered it and the deep shadows it created, and gave inspiration for the name of this winery. The 2020 posip is still holding quite a pale colour, though the nose shows some evolution relative to the 2021 tasted at the same time. The nose is briny-salty, like fresh shellfish, pea shoots, green herbs, wild and resinous, also sweet, lemon blossom and lemon zest, juice - such an interesting range. The palate is broad and powerful, a nice mix of the old style, a little riper and heavier, yet also taut and firm-fresh. Length and depth are excellent. This Thursday’s featured grape is Debit - “a currency accepted by Napoleon". Debit is a white grape indigenous to the Northern Dalmatian region of Croatia. Historically, in Napoleonic times, this high quality wine which produces high yields, was used as a form of currency, to pay off debts - hence the name! It thrives on inland vineyards, which benefit from good sun exposure, as well as cooling mountain breezes. It is believed to be indigenous to Croatia, but is also grown today in Northern Macedonia. When well produced, wines attain depth and intensity, with great minerality, and strong citrus notes. It is also well suited to maceration, producing wonderfully flavourful orange wines with notes of dried fruits, herbs and nuts. Central Europe produces some extraordinary old world wines. Earlier this year we were fortunate enough to discover and partner with two renowned wineries from the Goriška Brda region, nestled in the heart of Europe between the Alps and the Adriatic. One winery is old and wrapped in the history of the region, the other new, founded and run by one of Slovenia’s leading sommeliers. Both wineries work with a variety of grapes - both international and prized local varieties - grapes that thrive in the distinct climate of the Brda region. KLET BRDA WINERY Klet Brda Winery was founded in 1957 as a cooperative of the local wine growing families. It remains to this day under the same collective ownership, resulting in an organization that has become intrinsic to the life of the local community, in effect uniting four hundred families that cultivate vines on the steep slopes across the region’s hilly landscape. It is Slovenia’s largest cooperative, and despite its size, is very forward thinking and innovative. Regular international awards speak to the quality and consistency of production. GASPER WINERY Gasper Winery is the brainchild of Gašper Čarman, a voracious student of wine, who has been voted Slovenia’s best Sommelier twice - in 2013 and 2015. It was in 2013 that he created his own wine label, working in partnership with a selection of the Klet Brda cooperative families. His mission is to make a modern style of wine which reflects the unique terroir of Goriška Brda. After the Testament Babić Vintages release last week, we will delve a bit deeper into @testamentwinery, and the inspiration behind the brand. Testament’s vineyards are located in the region of Northern Dalmatia, in the immediate vicinity of the medieval town, Šibenik. With the unique climate and the specificity of the soil, their grapes have constantly struggled to grow and thrive. This centuries-old ritual of survival is felt and seen in the wines’ intense and deep colors, and in their intense flavors and aromas. It is a region of immense beauty, breathtaking views, rocky soil, Dalmatian winds and the life-giving sun, in other words perfect grape growing conditions. People have been making wine in the region of Šibenik for the past two thousand years. All those years ago, the Romans left a legacy there - a testament to the ancient wine making traditions in existence at the time. History has recorded not one but three testaments. The first, the hypocaust - a heated room from the 2nd century found near Šibenik, used by the old Romans to mature harvested grapes. The second discovery was 102 amphorae, found buried deep in the Adriatic Sea near Šibenik, that were used for the transportation of wine and olive oil. And last but not least, the Machina Nova, invented by the famous inventor Faust Vrančić, and used as a wine press. Testament Winery is a modern winery that is focused on sustaining and evolving this rich history of winemaking tradition. The Testament Babić is dense and full bodied with a dark red berry, herbal spice lift and freshness similar to some Italian varieties like Sangiovese or Aglianico. Let’s take a look at Babić - "a fighter with great potential". Babić is local to the central and northern Dalmatian coast - enjoying a hot Mediterranean climate with influence from both the Adriatic sea and Dinaric Alps. The best quality grapes are grown on old vines, in windy locations where yields are low. It thrives in extreme locations, on rocky, seemingly inaccessible terrain, where grapes need to fight to survive. Genetic analysis is complicated and ongoing. It is confirmed to be related to Plavac Mali - either as a grand-parent or half-sibling, with detailed analysis still underway. Wines are deeply coloured, with a palate of dark fruits, sour cherries and dalmatian herbal notes. It has great body and well-rounded tannins, resulting in a great balance.
