The Black Cherry Tree Project

The Black Cherry Tree Project

The Black Cherry Tree Project (BCTP) is a Birmingham-based commemorative arts and social justice initiative honoring Jefferson County’s 34 documented lynching victims. Through memorial tree plantings, artist-designed markers, and community dialogue, BCTP creates living spaces for remembrance, reflection, and healing. Rooted locally but with a national vision, the project serves as a framework for other communities to confront racial violence and plant their own “living memorials.” BCTP is fiscally sponsored by the National Performance Network (NPN), making all donations tax-deductible.
